Field Note #19 / Narrative / Interpretation
The Story Arrived First
Opening Thought
The story arrived before the photograph.
What I Noticed
As I looked across the desert, the Joshua trees felt like guardians.
Then I noticed the fallen tree in the foreground.
Almost immediately, a story appeared.
That was the tree I wanted in the frame.
Why It Works
Photographs don’t always begin with a subject.
Sometimes they begin with an interpretation.
Beyond The Frame
We rarely experience the world as a collection of facts.
We experience it through meaning.
Before we fully understand a situation, we often begin creating a story about it.
Sometimes that story helps us see something deeper.
Sometimes it prevents us from seeing what is actually there.
The challenge is knowing the difference.
Try This
Pay attention to the stories that appear before you raise the camera.
Visual IQ Takeaway
Sometimes the photograph follows the story.
